Great iPhone Tips Alecks Dad Devon Web Services

I've found a great  iPhone site

A great new iPhone web app - Glyphboard

And a great iPhone tip!

Use the above mentioned iPhone App Glyphboard to rename some of you cool new iPhone iOS4 folders with special characters instead of boring old words!

Glyphboard allows you to copy and paste special characters that are not available on the iPhone keyboard

You can then use this to give some of your folders special short names….

I'm looking forward to using it on Twitter too!

What’s New in iPhone OS 4.0

15 April, 2010 | Daniel | No Comment

In case you missed the news on those interwebs there is a new version of the software that runs your iPhone coming out later this year…

The iPhone OS (operating system) version 4.0 should be out this summer, and it boast a host of exciting new features that should enhance your iPhone experience !

Apple boasts of 100+ new features for users, but I won’t spoil the surprise and tell you them all.

But some of them are too good not to share, so here is my list of the best new features in iPhone OS 4.0

Multitasking

This has been a continuous gripe since the iPhone came along. Multitasking, where more than one app/program is running at the same time has not been possible on the iPhone so far. However now:

“Developers will have access to seven multitasking services, which will allow tasks to be performed in the background while preserving performance and battery life. So you’ll be able to make a Voice over IP call while playing a game or checking email, find a restaurant on Urbanspoon while listening to Pandora, and more”

Folders

This one is a doozy!

At the moment the most Apps you can install on your iPhone is 180.

However in iPhone OS 4.0 you will be able to organise your apps into folders and have easy (apparently) control over 2160 Apps!!! Now that is app-tastic…

Mail

Not that exciting this one, but still pretty good if you’re a heavy e-mail user:

“See messages from all your email accounts displayed together in a unified inbox, switch between inboxes more quickly, organize messages by threads”

But for me, I’ve saved the best till last…

iBooks

That sexy ebook reader you’ve seen on the iPad is now coming to the iPhone, complete with its free copy of Winnie the Pooh (one of my personal favourite books ever!)

If Apple are half as successful at changing the book publishing industry as they were at changing the music industry, the whole iBook thing should be very exciting…

Are you looking forward to iPhone OS 4.0 ?

I know I am…

Opera Mini Browser App for iPhone Approved ! !

Opera Mini Browser App for iPhone Approved ! ! Alecks Dad Devon Web Services
Wow ! Who’d have funk it !

Apple have actually approved the Opera browser for the iPhone!

“We are delighted to offer iPhone and iPod touch users a great browsing experience with the Opera Mini App,”

said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software

The current vibe on the net is that is is a very fast browser.

Opera

“enables fast mobile Web browsing by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the device, resulting in significantly improved page loading. Users of the app will notice an uptake in speed, especially on slower networks such as the 2G Edge network.”

I’ve always had a soft spot for Opera and it will be interesting to see how successful it is in the iPhone.

Have you tried it ?

What do you think ?

An Apple iPad advert appeared during the US Oscars TV coverage.

Check out the add below:

Now all I need to do is work out how to justify buying one of these to my wife !

I don’t know about you, but in my house our TV remote has mystical powers.

It can be right there for hours and then suddently… gone !

And almost impossible to find again, it’s gotta be some kind of magic… (or just my kids)

However I don’t seem to have the same problem with my iPhone, it’s never more that a few feet away from me, and if the kids go near it, they know that swift retribution will follow !

So this little device from RedEye looks just the thing to solve my remote control woes!

It simply plugs into the headphone socket on your device, leaving your dock connector open, and then beams out a limitless array of IR commands.

No news on availability in the UK, so if you see it let me know & I’ll do the same for you!

This potentially great device has popped up towards the end of CES.

The AirStash is a wireless SD card reader, which is targeted at iPhone OS devices (but does work with other WiFi-enabled devices) and supports up to 32GB SDHC cards.

For wireless connection the AirStash acts as a WiFi 802.11b/g access point and is accessed via a browser

No price, release date or battery life available yet, but this looks like a great idea for all us storage starved iPhone users…

UK’s Wi-Fi boom fueled by iPhone:

“The UK is set for a Wi-Fi boom, with the number of Wi-Fi Internet hotspots trebling treble over the next two years to cope with demand from users of Apple’s iPhone.

BT, which has 4,000 public hotspots across the UK, a doubling of traffic in 2009. It expects customers to be using close to 1 billion minutes of wi-fi on its networks in the year to March 2010.

The FT estimates that global Wi-Fi usage increased by 47 percent in 2009, with about 245,000 hotspots located around the world, according to In-Stat, the market research company.”

Amazon has launched its iPhone Kindle app in the UK.

The app, which allows readers to purchase eBooks from the Kindle store and read them on their iPhone, has been available in the US since March.

The free app allows users to synch bookmarks and notes between their iPhone, Kindle and PC software. It will also remember the last page you read, allowing you to pick up reading on the iPhone where you left off on the Kindle.

The app further brings the ability to read previews of books, and alter font sizes and vary the number of words displayed per line. Amazon’s also touting the fact that, unlike the Kindle, magazines and books can be displayed in colour.

Amazon claims it is currently working on software for the Mac and an app for the BlackBerry.

‘The Kindle for iPhone App is the perfect companion for customers who own a Kindle or Kindle DX, and a great way for customers around the world to download and read books even if they don’t yet have a Kindle,’ says Ian Freed, vice president for Amazon Kindle.”

I’ve been holding off getting an EyeTV device, but this new feature sounds very good.

Does anyone out there have an EyeTV stick or even better the iPhone app as well ? ?

Let us know how well it works…?
